Flyboard in Haute-Corse: Soaring Above the Mediterranean
Standing on a board connected to a jet ski by a long hose, propelled by the sheer force of water, you leave the sea surface and rise a few metres above the waves. Flyboarding is one of the most spectacular water activities you can try during a holiday in Haute-Corse. On a coast where sheltered gulfs, long sandy beaches and rocky headlands alternate, it is practised in a setting that adds greatly to the sensation: the citadel of Calvi in the background, the Nebbio mountains behind the Gulf of Saint-Florent, or an open horizon facing the island of Elba on the East Coast.
This page explains how the activity works, the conditions for practising it, the best period and the differences between the northern sectors of the island, before directing you to the area that matches your stay.

How does flyboarding work?
Imagined in the early 2010s by Marseille native Franky Zapata, a former jet-ski champion, the flyboard is based on a simple principle. The jet-ski draws seawater under its hull and redirects it, instead of expelling it behind, into a flexible hose 15 to 18 metres long connected to a board. Under this board, two downward-facing nozzles expel the water under pressure and lift the rider.
During an introductory session, it is the instructor, who remains on the jet-ski, who controls the power. The rider focuses on balance: foot position, knees slightly bent, gaze on the horizon. Adjustments are made in stages:
- floating and first flat pushes at the water's surface;
- rising out of the water at low height, around 1 to 2 metres;
- stabilisation and first movements in flight;
- for the most comfortable, a gradual climb to 4 to 5 metres, a typical height for a beginner.
Experienced riders can exceed 10 metres and perform tricks (dives, spins), but that is not the purpose of a first flight. A session generally lasts 15 to 20 minutes in the water, which is more than enough: the effort on the legs and core is real.
Where can you try flyboarding in Haute-Corse?
Flyboarding requires a calm, sufficiently deep body of water that is far enough from swimming areas. In Haute-Corse, this primarily concerns the coastline, which is divided into three main areas, each with a distinctly different atmosphere. The fourth area, Central Corsica, is mountainous and has no coastline.
- Bastia / Cap Corse: Gulf of Saint-Florent, east coast of the Cap
- Balagne: Bay of Calvi, coastline of L'Île-Rousse
- East Coast: Moriani-Plage, Costa Verde, Ghisonaccia
- Central Corsica: inland base, less than an hour and a half by road from the coast
Bastia and Cap Corse: the Gulf of Saint-Florent as the highlight
The Gulf of Saint-Florent, open to the Agriates desert, offers a large, sheltered body of water for much of the day, with very clear water. The east coast of the Cap, more sheltered from the libecciu, completes the offering around Bastia. All the details on the flyboard in Bastia and Cap Corse page.
Balagne: flying facing the citadel of Calvi
The Bay of Calvi and the coastline of L'Île-Rousse concentrate much of the summer water sports activity in Balagne. The turquoise waters and the terrain plunging into the sea create a very photogenic setting. See the flyboard in Balagne page.
The East Coast: flat sea and endless beaches
From Moriani-Plage to Ghisonaccia, the eastern plain unfolds dozens of kilometres of sand. The seabed slopes gently and the sea is often flat in the morning, conditions very favourable for a first session. Details on the flyboard on the East Coast page.
Central Corsica: a base for reaching the coast
Around Corte, the terrain is dominant and there is no body of water suitable for flyboarding. If you are staying inland, the flyboard and Central Corsica page tells you which coastline to head for according to your itinerary.
Which area to choose according to your profile?
- You're going on a family trip with teenagers: the East Coast, for its flat waters and large beaches where the rest of the tribe can swim during the session.
- You want the most beautiful setting: the Balagne, with the citadel of Calvi or the islets of L'Île-Rousse in the background.
- You combine sea and hiking: the Gulf of Saint-Florent, gateway to the Agriates and their beaches accessible on foot or by boat.
- You stay near Bastia: the east coast of Cap Corse, quick to access and often better sheltered from the west wind.
Age, fitness and safety
Flyboarding is accessible without prior experience, but it follows a few rules:
- Minimum age: generally set at around 16 years old in France, with variations depending on the operator. Check when booking.
- Weight: most operators set a limit of around 120 kg.
- Being able to swim is essential, even though a life jacket is mandatory.
- Equipment provided: life jacket, helmet and often a wetsuit.
- Usual contraindications: pregnancy, heart problems, recent surgery, fragility of the back, knees or ankles.
Regarding regulations, the speed of motorised craft is limited to 5 knots within the 300-metre band along the coastline, and towed or propelled activities take place in marked zones or beyond this band, according to locally set rules. This is one of the reasons why flyboarding is always practised with a qualified instructor, never as a free rental for a beginner.
When to go flyboarding in Haute-Corse?
The water sports season practically runs from April-May to October, with high activity in July and August. For comfort, June and September are often the best months: water already warm (around 22 to 25 °C), less crowded waters and easier-to-get slots.
On a daily basis, favour the morning. The thermal breeze often picks up in the early afternoon and creates a chop that makes balancing more delicate. On libecciu (west to south-west wind) or mistral days, sessions may be moved or postponed: this is normal and a matter of safety.
How much does a session cost?
Prices vary depending on the duration and the package. Nationwide, an introductory session of 15 to 20 minutes is most often between €70 and €180. Duo packages or longer flights cost more. Remember to book several days in advance during peak summer.
Other water activities to combine
Flyboarding pairs well with other water sensations:
- jet ski rental, to pilot yourself after flying;
- wakeboarding and towed buoy, for groups and families;
- paddleboarding, calmer, to cruise along the coves;
- diving, to go from air to the underwater world.
