Golf in Central Corsica: a sporting interlude at the foot of the mountains
The historic and geographical heart of the island, Central Corsica is centred around Corte and its deep valleys, between the Monte Rotondo massif and the Restonica gorges. Far from the coast, this mid- and high-mountain region offers a radically different setting from the coastal areas for anyone wishing to play golf: altitude, relative coolness and panoramas of peaks that often exceed 2,000 metres form the backdrop to the game here.
The former capital of independent Corsica in the 18th century under Pascal Paoli, Corte has retained a strong identity, today upheld by its university and its citadel perched on a rocky outcrop at the confluence of two rivers, the Tavignano and the Restonica. This mountain and island past is felt throughout the area: villages are built on high ground, valleys are steep-sided, and water, omnipresent in the form of torrents and rock pools, shapes much of the travel and outdoor activities on offer to visitors.

When to golf at altitude: a shorter season than elsewhere
Unlike the coastal areas, which are playable almost all year round, the Centre Corse experiences more marked winters, with temperatures that can drop well below zero at higher altitudes around Corte. The most favourable period is therefore rather from May to October, when the days are long enough and mild without being overwhelmed by the heat, unlike what can happen on the neighbouring East Coast. Summer there is often more pleasant than by the sea, as the altitude brings welcome coolness at the end of the day.
The differences between day and night can remain marked even in high season, especially in late spring and early autumn, when the cool air from the peaks descends into the valleys after sunset. This characteristic, typical of mid-mountain regions, clearly distinguishes the Centre Corse from the coastal areas, where nights generally remain milder all year round.
A landscape of valleys, torrents and peaks
The terrain of Central Corsica imposes its own rules: the rare flat areas nestle in the valley floors, framed by steep slopes covered with chestnut groves and Laricio pines. This configuration shapes a golfing experience different from that of the coastal areas, with drier air, changing light depending on the time of day and the exposure of the slopes, and a constant presence of water, carried by the many torrents that tumble down from the surrounding peaks. The forests of Laricio pines, an endemic Corsican species that can reach very great heights, cover a good part of the slopes and provide welcome shade on the paths that border the rare flat areas in the sector. Here are a few landmarks to situate this mountainous hinterland:
- The Restonica valley, famous for its rock pools and high-altitude lakes
- The lakes of Melo and Capitello, accessible on foot from Corte
- The Méli waterfall, in the Tavignano valley
- The village of Penta di Casinca, on the edge of Central Corsica and the eastern plain, with its stone houses clustered around the bell tower
- The citadel of Corte, dominating the old town from its rocky outcrop
What to plan for before playing in the mountains
Playing golf at altitude requires some adjustments compared to the coast. Temperature differences between morning and afternoon can be significant, especially at the start and end of the season: it is better to plan several layers of clothing rather than a single outfit. The air is generally drier than by the sea, which does not prevent good hydration from being necessary, particularly during prolonged exertion in full sun. Sturdy shoes, suitable for sometimes uneven terrain, are recommended, as is particular attention to the local weather, which can change more quickly in the mountains than on the coast.
A family discovery, at a more contemplative pace
Central Corsica lends itself well to relaxed golfing, especially for families looking for a quiet moment between hikes. The altitude and relative coolness allow play at times when the coast would already be too hot, making it an interesting option in the height of summer. It is also an opportunity to combine sport with the discovery of exceptional natural heritage, between gorges, torrents and mountain forests.
For children, the appeal of the region often lies as much in swimming in the clear rock pools as in discovering golf itself. Many families build their day around this dual programme, reserving the hottest afternoon hours for the coolness of mountain streams rather than the course.
Golf, hiking and canyoning: the Central Corsica trio
The region is above all known for its outdoor activities, and golf naturally fits into a broader stay. Many visitors combine a morning of play with a hike to the high-altitude lakes or a canyoning session in one of the area's steep valleys, particularly renowned for this activity. Those seeking more vertical thrills can also try the via ferrata or climbing, two disciplines well established around Corte.
This diversity of outdoor activities makes Central Corsica an ideal base for an active multi-day stay, where golf comes in as a more relaxed interlude between two more physical outings. Many visitors appreciate this alternation of rhythms, between the sustained effort of a high-altitude hike and the quieter concentration of a golf course.
Other activities and stops to combine
Between two rounds, discovering Corte and its citadel is almost a natural choice, as is a refreshing stop at one of the pools in the Restonica valley. The town is easy to explore on foot, with its cobbled streets climbing to the rocky outcrop where the citadel stands, offering views that take in both the old town and the surrounding peaks. Those who enjoy broader landscapes can head up to the mountain lakes in the area, while those seeking a bit of cultural refreshment will appreciate the university town itself, with its narrow streets and regional museum. For accommodation, the campsites in Corte, often set beside the river, provide a convenient base for exploring between golf, hiking and freshwater swimming, just like what the Corte area also offers in terms of accommodation.
