Horse riding in Haute-Corse: an adventure not to be missed
The Balagne is undoubtedly one of the most photogenic regions for horse riding in Haute-Corse: on one side the hilltop villages and olive groves, on the other a coastline stretching from the lively beaches of Calvi to the Agriates desert, wilder in nature. On horseback, you literally go from one setting to another in a single outing, making it a unique area on the island.

The equestrian centre of the Reginu valley
The area's leading equestrian centre is Arbo Valley, located in the commune of Monticello, 5 km from Île-Rousse, in the heart of the Reginu valley. Around sixty horses live there in semi-freedom on a property of several dozen hectares, which sets the tone: here, horse riding is practised in the great outdoors, far from the riding arenas. From May to October, the centre offers in particular an iconic outing to Ostriconi beach, with a horseback swim in turquoise water bordered by dunes, as well as rides to Lozari beach and high-altitude routes offering a 360° panorama over the whole of Balagne.
For those staying at a campsite in Calvi or near Île-Rousse, the centre remains accessible in about twenty minutes by road, making it easy to organise a half-day or a full day on horseback without straying too far from the coast!
Between hilltop villages and olive groves
What sets horse rides in Balagne apart is the proximity of the hilltop villages that overlook the region: Sant'Antonino, Pigna, Corbara and Lumio. Some equestrian routes follow the hills at their feet, amid century-old olive groves and cultivated terraces that have earned Balagne its agricultural reputation. Along the way you also come across isolated Romanesque chapels and the remains of mills, evidence of a region inhabited and cultivated for centuries.
To extend your discovery of these typical villages after a horse ride, many of them can easily be visited in an afternoon, just a few minutes' drive from one another.
Towards the Agriates desert and the northern beaches
The Agriates desert, this preserved expanse of maquis between Balagne and Nebbio, is one of the great playgrounds for horse riding in the area. The rides that venture there, often scheduled early in the morning or at the end of the day, cross a landscape of dunes and maquis almost untouched by construction, before reaching the coast. Combined with a stop at one of the beaches of Haute-Corse, these outings are among the most memorable in the whole region.
For beginners and families
The shortest rides, departing directly from the equestrian farm, remain accessible to beginner riders and are well suited to children from around ten years old, with an adapted pace and close supervision. Longer rides towards the Agriate or on mountain routes, however, require a minimum level of confidence on horseback, if only to manage several hours in the saddle on sometimes uneven terrain.
When to go?
The ideal season runs from May to October, the period during which the iconic rides towards the Ostriconi and the Agriate are offered. Spring offers soft light and flowering maquis, while summer allows swimming on horseback but requires early departures to avoid the heat. Outside this period, rides focus more on the Reginu valley and its immediate surroundings, with the long treks towards the Agriate less frequently scheduled.
Other activities to combine on site
Balagne lends itself well to a stay that alternates horse riding with other discoveries: hiking in the hinterland, kayaking or diving along the coast between Calvi and Île-Rousse. All the activities in the area are listed on the activities in Haute-Corse page.
For accommodation, a campsite near Calenzana, in the heart of Balagne, makes it easy to reach the beaches of Ostriconi and Bodri as well as the first mountain trails. On the seaside, a stay in Calvi via the Paduella campsite also makes it easy to combine beach time with excursions to the hilltop villages of the hinterland.
