Horseback riding in Haute-Corse: an adventure not to be missed
The Central Corsica completely changes pace compared to coastal areas: here, horseback riding takes place at the foot of the peaks, between icy streams and laricio pine forests. Corte, former capital of independent Corsica, with its citadel perched like an “eagle’s nest” above the Restonica and Tavignano gorges, serves as the region’s natural anchor point. Further south, the Fiumorbu opens another gateway to the mountains, from the plains to the forests of Col de Verde.

Other Activities
The Corte equestrian center, between torrent and maquis
In Corte itself, the Centre Équestre Equiloisirs-FAE occupies a 10-hectare property along a torrent, with direct access to the surrounding maquis trails. Its stable of around thirty horses and ponies offers a variety of outings, from introductory rides for the youngest to longer excursions toward the heights overlooking the town.
For those staying at a campsite in Corte, the immediate proximity to the Restonica Valley makes it easy to combine a horseback ride with a swim in clear water or a visit to the citadel, all just a few minutes' drive away.
Toward the Fiumorbu and the foothills of South Central Corsica
A little further south, the Société Hippique l'Évasion in Prunelli-di-Fiumorbo enjoys a prime position between the eastern plain and the first foothills of the Fiumorbu, this valley that climbs up towards Ghisoni and the Col de Verde. The centre is particularly renowned for its family-friendly welcome and offers rides suitable for children as well as more experienced riders wishing to venture inland.
Those staying at a campsite in Ghisonaccia can thus combine relaxation on the coast with a horse-riding excursion into the hinterland, without going through Corte.
On the trails of the Corsican mountains
What characterises horse riding in Central Corsica is the diversity of landscapes crossed in a single outing: centuries-old chestnut groves, forests of Corsican pine, streams with emerald-green waters and high-altitude pastures. The hiking trails that criss-cross the region often follow old mule tracks, now taken over by equestrian centres for their rides. Nature lovers will also appreciate the landscapes around the mountain lakes and the waterfalls of Haute-Corse, although direct access on horseback generally remains limited to the most practicable valleys.
For beginners and families
Rides organised from Corte or from the Fiumorbu remain accessible to beginner riders, with short routes suitable for young children in the form of pony rides. However, itineraries that venture further into the heights, towards the Col de Verde or the ridges overlooking Corte, require more established experience, as the terrain of Central Corsica is significantly steeper than on the coast.
When to go?
In Central Corsica, the season depends more on altitude than on the coast: late spring (May-June) and early autumn remain the most pleasant periods, once the snow has melted on the summits but before the intense heat. Summer, often stifling on the coast, is precisely one of the area's assets: the relative coolness of the mountains attracts many riders in search of fresh air. In winter, however, activity at the centres closest to the summits is greatly reduced, as weather conditions become more uncertain.
Other activities to combine on site
Central Corsica is also a reference for other outdoor activities: canyoning in the Restonica gorges, via ferrata on the surrounding cliffs, or simply hiking towards the glacial lakes. All the activities in the area are listed on the page activities in Haute-Corse.
For accommodation, a campsite in Corte allows you to easily reach the citadel and the Restonica gorges. On the coast, a stay near Ghisonaccia, on the east coast, already offers views of the inland mountains and serves as a good base for an excursion towards the Fiumorbu.
