Microlight flying in Central Corsica: glacial lakes, granite valleys and peaks seen from the sky
In the heart of the island, Corsica changes scale. The beaches fade away, the sea disappears behind the ridgelines, and the landscape closes in around peaks over 2,000 m, deep valleys and small lakes set like drops of sky in the rock. This is the wild heart of the island, the part you hike through for days on end. From a microlight, you take it all in at a glance, with that rare feeling of flying over a mountain region far vaster than its actual size.

The Corsican mountains as you have never seen them
From the sky, Central Corsica reads like a granite sculpture. Ridges follow one after another, slopes plunge evenly down to the valley floors, and rivers trace long pale furrows between the rocks. Where the road never reaches, the flight reveals glacial cirques, scree fields, forests of Laricio pines and beech trees, and high pastures still green in early summer.
The contrast with the coast is striking: just a few dozen kilometres from the shoreline, you are in a mineral world with no houses and sometimes no trace of human presence. That is what makes this area so unique, very different from a flight over the sea.
The main landmarks of the Corte area
Depending on the route, a scenic microlight flight in the Corte area may let you glimpse:
- the town of Corte and its citadel perched on its rocky spur, where two rivers meet;
- the high-altitude lakes, including Lake Melo and Lake Capitello, tucked away at the head of the Restonica valley;
- Monte Rotondo, which rises to 2,622 m;
- Monte d'Oro, at 2,389 m, instantly recognisable by its silhouette;
- the Restonica valley, with its granite pools and its mountain stream.
The exact routes always depend on the day's conditions: mountain air currents are unpredictable, and the pilot adjusts the route accordingly.
Another world to the north: Niolu, Asco and the great peaks
When the wind and visibility are right, your gaze travels further northwest, where the island's highest peaks rise. Monte Cinto, Corsica's highest point at 2,706 m, towers over the upper Asco valley, while the Niolu plateau is home to Lake Nino, at 1,743 m, and its pozzines, the small damp lawns typical of the Corsican mountains. Further south, Lake Bastani hides at an altitude above 2,000 m.
Seen from above, these lakes look like dark mirrors set on the stone, especially early in the season, when they still reflect the melting snow.
Mountain air currents: what really changes
Flying in the mountains is nothing like flying by the sea. The terrain channels the wind, creates rotors downwind of the ridges and thermals along the sun-warmed slopes. In practice, this means flights depend far more on the time of day.
The morning is the ideal slot: the air is stable, the sky clear and visibility excellent. On a summer afternoon, the heat builds cumulus clouds over the ridges and, more rarely, isolated thunderstorms. Pilots are therefore very cautious and prefer to book the first hours of the day.
When to fly in Central Corsica?
Spring is the most spectacular time: the peaks are still snow-capped, the lakes are thawing and the streams are swollen with meltwater. Summer offers long days but more active air currents as the day goes on. Autumn is superb too, with beech woods turning russet and wonderfully clear air.
Bring a warm layer even when it's hot on the ground: at altitude the air is cooler, especially in an open aircraft like a trike.
A trip to share with the children?
Microlight flights carry only one passenger at a time, so families need to plan a little differently. For younger children, check the minimum age and weight for the aircraft before booking, and choose a short flight if it's their first time. A calm morning flight, with a pilot who takes the time to explain what you're seeing, is the best way to make them want to come back.
Where to stay in the area
Corte is the natural base for exploring the centre of the island. The campsites in Corte let you fan out towards the Restonica, the Niolu and the Asco. To get an overview of the whole area, the dedicated Central Corsica page brings together the main landmarks.
Other activities to combine with a flight
If the flight has made you want to head up into the mountains, hiking in Central Corsica lets you reach on foot the lakes and ridges you spotted from the sky. For a more watery day out, canyoning in Central Corsica takes you down those same streams from the inside.
