Horse Riding in Haute-Corse: An Adventure Not to Be Missed
The Balagne is undoubtedly one of the most photogenic regions for horse riding in Haute-Corse: on one side, the perched villages and olive groves, on the other, a coastline stretching from the lively beaches of Calvi to the Agriates Desert, wilder in nature. On horseback, you literally move from one landscape to another in a single outing, making it a truly unique area on the island.

The equestrian center of the Reginu valley
The reference equestrian center in the area is Arbo Valley, located in the town of Monticello, 5 km from Île-Rousse, in the heart of the Reginu valley. About sixty horses live there in semi-freedom on a domain of several dozen hectares, which sets the tone: here, horseback riding is practiced in the heart of nature, far from riding arenas. From May to October, the center notably offers an iconic outing to the Ostriconi beach, with a horseback swim in turquoise water framed by dunes, as well as rides to the Lozari beach and high-altitude routes offering a 360° panorama over all of Balagne.
For those staying at a campsite in Calvi or near Île-Rousse, the center remains accessible in about twenty minutes by car, making it easy to organize a half-day or a full day on horseback without straying too far from the coast!
Between perched villages and olive groves
What sets outings in Balagne apart is the proximity of the perched villages that dominate the region: Sant'Antonino, Pigna, Corbara, or even Lumio. Some equestrian trails run along the hills at their feet, amidst century-old olive groves and cultivated terraces that contribute to Balagne's agricultural reputation. Along the way, you'll encounter both isolated Romanesque chapels and remnants of mills, testifying to a region inhabited and cultivated for centuries.
To extend the discovery of these typical villages after a horse ride, most of them can easily be visited in an afternoon, just a few minutes' drive from each other.
Towards the Agriates desert and the northern beaches
The Agriates desert, this expanse of preserved maquis between Balagne and Nebbio, is one of the great playgrounds for horse riding in the area. The rides that venture there, often scheduled early in the morning or late in the day, cross a landscape of dunes and maquis almost untouched by construction, before reaching the coastline. Combined with a stop on one of the beaches of Haute-Corse, these outings rank among the most memorable in the entire region.
For beginners and families
The shortest rides, departing directly from the equestrian farm, remain accessible to beginner riders and are well-suited to children from around ten years old, with an adapted pace and close supervision. The longer outings towards the Agriate or on mountain itineraries, on the other hand, require a minimum level of comfort on horseback, if only to hold several hours of riding on sometimes rugged terrain.
When to go?
The ideal season runs from May to October, during which the emblematic outings towards Ostriconi and the Agriate are offered. Spring offers soft light and flowering maquis, while summer allows swimming with horses but requires early departures to avoid the heat. Outside this period, rides focus more on the Reginu valley and the immediate surroundings, with the long treks towards the Agriate being less frequently scheduled.
Other activities to combine on site
Balagne lends itself well to a stay that alternates horse riding with other discoveries: hiking in the hinterland, kayaking, or diving along the coast between Calvi and Île-Rousse. All activities in the area are listed on the activities in Haute-Corse page.
For accommodation, a campsite near Calenzana, in the heart of Balagne, makes it easy to reach the beaches of Ostriconi and Bodri as well as the first mountain trails. On the seaside, a stay in Calvi via Camping Paduella also allows you to easily combine beach time and excursions to the perched villages of the hinterland.
