But just behind this coastal strip, the mountains close in quickly: the massif rises within a few kilometres to over 1,900 metres, and the rivers flowing down from it carve deep gorges before reaching the coast. It is in this hinterland, away from the beaches, that canyoning in Balagne takes place, an activity concentrated in a specific area rather than spread across the whole region. Bonifato and the Figarella valley, the heart of Balagne canyoning
The reference area is located in the Bonifato forest, about twenty minutes from Calvi, where the Figarella river rises on the slopes of Monte Grosso, which culminates at 1,937 meters. As it rushes down toward the plain, it carves out natural pools in the granite, fed by snowmelt from the massif until late spring. This is a mid-mountain canyoning experience, less spectacular than the great classics of the island's center but accessible without a long journey from the coast, in a setting of laricio pines and holm oaks that contrasts with the mineral atmosphere of the Balagne coastline.
Unlike the dark schist that dominates Cap Corse, the massif overlooking Balagne is composed of light granite, a rock that erosion shapes differently: the pools are often more rounded, polished by centuries of water flow, and the boulders that line the bed of the Figarella form a mineral landscape quite characteristic of the Calvi hinterland. The Bonifato forest itself is renowned for its laricio pines, trees that can exceed several centuries in age and whose slender silhouette accompanies much of the ascent toward the first cascades of the canyon.

This highly concentrated geography explains why Balagne does not have multiple canyoning sites spread across its territory, contrary to what its size might suggest: most of the activity takes place on this single massif, between Bonifato and the first foothills of Monte Grosso. The rest of the Balagne hinterland, gentler and more oriented towards olive trees and vineyards, is better suited to hiking between villages or discovering heritage, without offering any other comparable relief for canyoning.
A massif that extends towards the centre of the island
Beyond the first slopes of Bonifato, the mountain range continues inland and gradually joins the massifs of central Corsica, where rivers become longer and gorges more numerous. It is in fact at Calenzana, at the gateway to Balagne, that the GR20 begins, the long-distance hiking trail that crosses the island from north to south along this same mountain spine: a good indicator of how the Balagne massif extends, without interruption, towards the heart of Corsica. For practitioners who wish to string together several different descents during the same trip, it is common to complete an outing in Balagne with a short hour's drive inland, towards canyoning in Centre Corse, where the choice of routes is considerably wider.
Hiking, beach and village: combining canyoning with other facets of Balagne
The canyoning day combines naturally with other discoveries in the area. When to go to Balagne
Spring, between April and June, remains the most favourable period: snowmelt from Monte Grosso maintains a steady flow in the Figarella, with water that is still cool but pools that are well filled. Summer, from July to September, offers warmer water that is pleasant for swimming, but the flow drops noticeably after several weeks without rain, which can reduce the appeal of certain sections at the end of the season. Autumn and winter, on the other hand, are not recommended: the cold at altitude and sudden flash floods, frequent from the first heavy autumn rains, make the activity risky on this type of narrow terrain where the water rises quickly after a storm.
As with any canyon, equipment matters as much as the season: a neoprene wetsuit, a helmet and closed shoes with grippy soles are essential on the polished granite blocks, which are often slippery even out of the water. Checking the day's water level before setting off remains the best precaution, especially in spring when snowmelt can change the flow from one day to the next.
