Why wakeboarding currently has no presence in Central Corsica
This page, aside from being a little trap, fully deserves to provide some explanations! The region is structured around glacial valleys and fast-flowing rivers: the Restonica and the Tavignano around Corte, the Golo further north towards the Niolu. These are magnificent waterways for pool swimming or hiking, but their profile (shallow, rocky, sometimes torrential) rules out any motorized navigation from the outset. You need a real body of water to consider wakeboarding, and Central Corsica has only one of notable size.
Lake Calacuccia, the largest body of water in the region (and why it stops there)
The Calacuccia lake, an artificial reservoir created on the Golo in the 1960s, is indeed the largest body of water in Central Corsica. You could almost believe it... except that motorboating is prohibited there. Only fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding are practised there, in a rather spectacular mountain setting, it must be said. Wakeboarding, which requires a tow boat, therefore has no place there, and it is not a question of a lack of local supply: it is a question of regulations on this body of water.
What really glides in Central Corsica
Rest assured, the region is not short of water-based thrills, just not these ones. The Restonica gorges offer turquoise pools where you jump in and cool off rather than ski. Canyoning lets you descend the steep streams of Central Corsica by abseiling and natural slides, a very real glide but vertical rather than horizontal. And for lovers of the great outdoors, hikes to the glacial lakes (Melo, Capitello) round off a stay largely focused on the mountains.
Where to go for real wakeboarding from Corte
From Corte, two options are available to you, at roughly equal distance: the Balagne on the Calvi side, about 1h15 to 1h20 by road, or the Bastia area and the Gulf of Saint-Florent, about the same travel time via the Restonica road then the Golo valley. In both cases, it is a lovely mountain road before reaching the sea, largely doable in a day if you set off early in the morning.
