Boat rental in Balagne: from Calvi Bay to the coves of Galéria
Balagne is the garden of Haute-Corse: a coastline carved into wide bays, backed by granite mountains rising to Monte Cinto (2,706 m), the island’s highest peak. This proximity between sea and mountains is what makes a boat trip here so special: you sail on clear water with the peaks as a backdrop, and move from a fine sandy beach to a rocky cove in just a few minutes of navigation.

A coastline to discover bay by bay
From north to south, Balagne is divided into three main bodies of water: the Gulf of Île-Rousse and Lozari, the bay of Calvi dominated by its citadel, then the wilder coastline stretching towards Galéria and the Gulf of Girolata. Each area has its own atmosphere: family beaches, red cliffs, deep and very clear water around the capes.
The region's great advantage lies in its short distances: the bay of Calvi is large enough to explore for a day without getting bored, and well protected enough for outings to remain accessible to beginners when the weather is calm.
Calvi, Île-Rousse, Lozari: where to set off sailing in Balagne
Here are the areas that structure most outings:
- Calvi: its marina, Genoese citadel and long Pinède beach set the scene, with the Revellata point to the west, a rocky cape covered in maquis much appreciated by boaters.
- Algajola: a small sandy bay, halfway between Calvi and L'Île-Rousse.
- L'Île-Rousse: a port town founded in the 18th century, recognisable by its small islet linked by a causeway and its lighthouse.
- Lozari: a 1.5 km white-sand beach in a well-protected bay, popular when the west wind blows.
- Galéria: the gateway to the wild coast to the south, with its deserted coves and the landscapes of the Fango Biosphere Reserve.
To prepare for your stop ashore, the Calvi page presents the town and its must-sees, while the Lozari beach page details a site that enjoys calm waters even when it's windy.
Calvi Bay and the Revellata Point
Calvi is probably the best base in the area: the bay is wide, the landscapes varied and the sea remains easy to read. Strolling along the beach, you can enjoy the view of the citadel and the feeling of being at the foot of the mountains. The Pinède beach, which borders the town, is one of the most convenient swimming stops once you're anchored.
To the west, the Revellata Point heralds a wilder setting: the water becomes deep, blue and sometimes choppier. The area is known for its rich seabed, making it a favourite spot for divers and boaters alike. By boat, you can admire the cliffs, small coves and the lighthouse, provided you stay cautious in a westerly wind.
From L'Île-Rousse to Lozari: beaches and sheltered waters
To the east, the coast becomes gentler. The Gulf of L'Île-Rousse is ideal for a first experience: distances are short, Bodri beach, near Corbara, offers a setting of sand and rocks, and Lozari beach extends the trip towards the north-east.
Here you are at the gateway to the Agriates: Ostriconi beach marks the boundary between Balagne and the desert, a very wild area where the coastline remains uninhabited. The hilltop villages of the hinterland, such as Lumio or Corbara, can also be admired from the sea, like balconies overlooking the gulf.
To the south: Galéria, the Fango and the wild coast
South of Calvi, the coast becomes rougher. This is where the granite takes on deep red hues and the mountains plunge straight into the sea. The coastline between Argentella and Galéria remains very unspoilt: Argentella beach, in Crovani Bay, is an example of these wild beaches where boaters love to stop.
Further south still, the Fango delta is part of a biosphere reserve: the site is fragile, and visitors move quietly without encroaching on the environment. To find out more before sailing, the Fango Valley page explains the context. The Scandola Nature Reserve, south of Galéria, is subject to strict regulations: check before any trip in this area.
Which boat to choose in Balagne?
Several options are available, and the right choice depends on the distance you plan to cover:
- Boat without a licence: at sea, an engine under 6 HP (4.5 kW) can be operated without a licence. This is suitable for short trips in the bay of Calvi or along Lozari beach.
- Boat requiring a coastal licence: above 6 HP, this licence is required. It allows you to go as far as the Revellata or to reach more distant coves.
- With a skipper: convenient for a day without worrying about navigation, moorings or the weather.
Before setting off, ask the rental company for the authorised navigation area, the deposit amount and the equipment provided (life jackets, anchor, VHF radio if applicable).
Beginners and families: where to start?
The bays of Calvi and Lozari are the most suitable for first-timers: they are wide, landmarks are easy to read and you can return to the beach within minutes. Opt for a trip in the morning, when the sea is calmer, and plan a swimming break at anchor.
With children, think about the day's logistics: plenty of water, hats, life jackets in the right size, and a comfortable return time. To sleep near the water, the campsites in Calvi and the campsites in L'Île-Rousse provide quick access to the departure ports.
When to go: the ideal season in Balagne
The pleasure boating season runs in practice from May to October, with an ideal period between June and September for warm sea and long days. In July and August, visitor numbers increase: more boats at anchor, more crowds on the beaches, and the need to book in advance.
Wind is the parameter to watch: Balagne is exposed to westerly winds, which can stir up rougher seas in the afternoon. An early departure and a return before late afternoon limit unpleasant surprises. For an overview of the region before planning, the Balagne page presents its villages, beaches and landscapes.
Other activities to combine with a boat trip
A day on the water can be extended with other water-based activities. Thrill-seekers can try jet skiing, towed inflatables or wakeboarding. To explore the seabed, diving is a classic in Calvi, especially around the Revellata.
