Spearfishing, an impossible practice far from the sea
Unlike angling, spearfishing with a harpoon is a strictly maritime activity in France: it is not practiced in rivers or lakes. Central Corsica, landlocked in the heart of the mountains, cannot therefore accommodate this activity. If the harpoon is your goal, head instead to the coastline, for example around Bastia / Cap Corse, the Balagne, or the Eastern Coast.
Angling in Corte: one of the best river terrains in Corsica
However, for angling, Corte is an ideal starting point. The Tavignano, which rises in the Rotondo massif, is considered one of the best trout rivers on the island: its gorges carve deep pools accessible from Corte, between hiking and fly fishing or bait fishing. The Restonica, a torrent-gorge equally renowned for its wild trout, completes this playground, as does the Golo, Corsica's longest river, which also crosses the northern part of the island. These same valleys, particularly the Tavignano gorges, are also well suited to canyoning for those who want to combine whitewater and thrills with their stay.
The macrostigma trout, a fish found only here
The real specialty of fishing in Central Corsica is the macrostigma trout: a Mediterranean subspecies, recognizable by its large black spots, found in France only in Corsica (and elsewhere only in Sardinia and a few rivers in the Maghreb). The fishing federation runs conservation programs to preserve wild stocks, threatened by hybridization with farmed trout introduced in the 20th century. Many sections of the Tavignano and Restonica are thus managed as no-kill zones to protect these populations.
Fishing license: rules specific to Haute-Corse
An island peculiarity to know before you go: Corsica is not part of any national reciprocity agreement. A fishing license bought elsewhere in France will therefore not be valid here: you need to buy a license specific to Haute-Corse (department 2B), directly online at cartedepeche.fr or from a local AAPPMA, with day or week options convenient for visiting holidaymakers. The trout fishing season generally opens in mid-March and runs until mid-September, but exact dates and any temporary closures (floods, drought) vary each year: it's best to check the current decree before setting out. Also note: eel is prohibited at all stages in Corsican freshwaters, as are white-clawed crayfish and lamprey, which are also protected.
