THE BUGHJA WATERFALL

Bughja Waterfall – San Gavino di Fiumorbo

The Bughja waterfall (Piscia di a Bughja) is one of the highest on the island and the most majestic, 100m high, with a large basin where you can swim. Its name comes from the Corsican word Bughju, which means darkness.

On the RN 198 one kilometer south exit, locate the village of Migliacciaru and its roundabout. Follow the direction of Prunelli di Fium’Orbo and at the Abazzia roundabout, then take the D45 then turn left onto the D445 towards San Gavinu di Fium’Orbu.

San Gavinu is the starting point to reach the waterfall, which you can also see when leaving the village. At the end of winter, when the waterfall is at its maximum flow, its white veil is impressive, even from a distance.

The easiest way is to park in San Gavinu and start the hike towards the hamlet of Bruschiccia, up to the Vaccina fountain located on your left. The path is then indicated and marked. It’s a little steep at first but don’t worry, it won’t last and the rest is very easy.

The route passes through a very beautiful chestnut grove, which will surely make you want to bring back chestnut jam or good Corsican specialties for your return home.

To experience all the authentic side of this deep and seductive Corsica, you will even see a pig enclosure. All that’s missing is the wild boars ! After crossing the small Bughja stream, a tributary of the Abateco, a climb is required to reach a shepherd’s shelter, also typical of everything that makes up the Corsican soul.

Here you are in perfect immersion and communion with this sumptuous nature of Haute-Corse which should not be missed when you come to the Isle of Beauty, even if you are a fan of the beach and relaxation.

Then follow the path along a small local stone wall, it will lead you towards a small descent which guides you to the bottom of the valley, at the foot of the waterfall. In the dizzying sound of the water falling from 100 meters, you feel very small in the face of the majestic and impetuous character of nature.

Several small natural pools allow for safe swimming, but the place is also ideal for a picnic. Several large flat rocks even allow you to take a nap or lounge in the sun afterwards.

It’s an easy walk, accessible to everyone, which takes 1 hour 45 minutes for a distance of less than 2 km round trip and a difference in altitude of 215 meters. Do not miss !
