In need of some fresh air?
If we were to sum up the Island of Beauty in one phrase, it would be the subtle blend of paradise beaches and mountains, the warmth of the Mediterranean and the coolness of torrents, the turquoise reflections of coves to the greenery of waterfalls. It is impossible to spend a holiday in Haute-Corse without setting off to discover the waterfalls nestled in the heart of the valleys, and enjoying a unique landscape as close as possible to the rivers of the Island of Beauty.
The short distances found in Northern Corsica allow you, if you have rented a car, to sometimes spend the morning at the beach and, as soon as the sun is at its zenith, to head back into the hinterland to seek the coolness of the mountains and a waterfall, even ending the day again on the coast to admire the sunset.
The waterfalls of Corsica: an exceptional wealth in preserved spaces
The exceptional wealth of Corsica in equally magnificent waterfalls and torrents is largely explained by its geography, with fairly high reliefs as if planted in the middle of an ocean of warmth, the Mediterranean Sea.
In the shoulder seasons, the contrast between warm water temperatures and cold air at altitude causes precipitation in the mountains: this is why Corsica is so green and why its waterfalls remain powerful and majestic, even most often in the middle of summer.
Corsican waterfalls often extend into natural pools, carved naturally into the rock, with blue-green reflections due to their purity. While the waterfall water is cool, the pools can be warm, with rock heat that pleasantly envelops you.
Not all of them are accessible for swimming, and you should always check weather conditions, even in the middle of summer. Storms can occur, especially after mid-August. A waterfall’s flow can increase very quickly and become dangerous.
Some sites allow canyoning, with Corsica having some of the finest sites in Europe, some of which are family-friendly: however, this is often a regulated activity, where you also need to check weather conditions carefully.
Like torrents, Corsican waterfalls and rivers feature mountain water of great purity, some of which is bottled as a premium natural spring water, exported across Europe.
However, avoid drinking water that is too icy if it’s very hot, as your intestines might not appreciate it!
